“Local” New Buffalo: Gourmet Meats, Organic Produce and…Bacon Jam!
“The butcher shop of my dreams” is how Kevin Pang described it in the Chicago Tribune. Meat aficionados can't get much closer to heaven than Local in New Buffalo. An artisanal meat market, the aroma engulfs you the minute you open door: bacon, sausage, the pungent smoky scent of cured meats. If you weren’t already hungry, you will be when walk in.
Owned and operated by Pat and Ellie Mullins, Local specializes in handmade charcuterie complimented by a constantly evolving selection of cheeses, breads and local produce. The quaint shop carries everything from salami and smoked pork chops to lamb, thick cut bacon and jars of duck fat. Pat processes all of the meat on the premises. Sausage isn’t just Italian here; try the spicy fennel, turkey curry or thai chili sausage to awaken your taste buds. Their popular bacon jam sells out so quickly that the shop instituted “Bacon Jam Sundays”. While it is not always the only day of the week you can get bacon jam, you have a better chance on Sundays when a freshly made batch hits the butcher case.
The store also stocks organic grass fed beef raised in nearby Three Oaks at Middlebrook Farms, along with free range chicken from area poultry farms. Local prides itself on offering only humanely and sustainably raised meats and produce. Their products are made with seasonal ingredients native to the area, free of hormones, antibiotics, or pesticides. Since both produce and products change regularly, each visit is a unique experience. You don’t get much closer to “farm to table” than right here.
